Gartner also warns that over 40% of agentic AI projects will be canceled by the end of 2027 over cost, unclear value or weak risk controls.

2. Your app inside AI assistants

Users increasingly start tasks in ChatGPT, Claude or Gemini. In January 2026, Swiggy let users order food and groceries from these assistants, and in March 2026 Angi launched an app inside ChatGPT for home projects.

What it means for you: treat assistants as a new channel and decide which of your services should be available there.

3. MCP becomes the standard connector

The Model Context Protocol (MCP) is how most of these integrations work: a server that exposes your app’s actions as tools an AI model can call. Anthropic donated MCP to the new Agentic AI Foundation under the Linux Foundation in December 2025, alongside contributions from Block and OpenAI.

4. On-device AI goes mainstream

Since iOS 26, any app can call Apple’s on-device model through the Foundation Models framework, offline and with no inference fee. On Android, the ML Kit GenAI APIs run Gemini Nano on supported phones.

What it means for you: private, offline features such as summarising notes or extracting form fields no longer need a cloud bill, but you need a fallback for older phones.

5. Hybrid on-device and private cloud

On-device models are small, so platforms now pair them with privacy-preserving cloud models. At WWDC26 Apple opened Private Cloud Compute to developers, using the same API as the on-device model, with a larger context window and reasoning.

What it means for you: design each feature to route between device and cloud based on task size and data sensitivity.

6. Small open-weight models you can ship

Open models are now small enough for phones and edge devices. Google’s Gemma 4 family, released in April 2026, includes on-device variants, and Alphabet said in July that Gemma 4 had been downloaded over 300 million times.

What it means for you: when you need the same model on every platform, or full control over data, an open model is now a realistic option.

7. Voice agents that take real calls

Speech-to-speech models now handle natural conversation with low delay. OpenAI’s Realtime API is generally available for production voice agents and supports phone calls over SIP.

What it means for you: appointment booking, order status and first-line support can be offered by phone and in-app voice, with handoff to staff.

Users increasingly show rather than type. Thumbtack’s new experience lets homeowners describe a problem with a photo, voice note or text, and Uber Eats’ Cart Assistant turns a photographed grocery list into a draft cart.

9. OS-level assistants and App Intents

Apple’s App Intents framework lets Siri, Shortcuts, Spotlight and Apple Intelligence trigger actions inside your app; Android offers similar hooks through Gemini.

11. Generative visual commerce
