Ask ChatGPT for “the best web development company for a startup” or “a reliable app agency in India” and it will name a handful of firms. If yours is not on that list, a buyer may never reach your website. So owners now ask how to get my business on ChatGPT, and whether there is a ChatGPT SEO trick that makes it recommend them.
There is no trick, and no one can promise placement. But there is a clear process, based on how OpenAI says ChatGPT search works. This guide is for B2B service firms such as agencies, consultancies and software companies.
Key takeaways
- ChatGPT search finds sites through OpenAI’s crawler, OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI says sites that block it will not be shown in ChatGPT search answers (OpenAI crawler docs).
- Start by testing 10–20 real buyer prompts and logging which sources ChatGPT cites. Those sources, not a secret algorithm, tell you where to work.
- For service firms, cited sources are often directories, best-of lists, review sites, forums and the firm’s own pages. Your name, services and location must match across all of them.
- Write specific, first-hand pages buyers can quote: services, prices or price ranges, process, case studies. Google gives the same advice for its AI features.
- Measure it: ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to links, and Bing Webmaster Tools now reports AI citations.

How ChatGPT decides which businesses to recommend
When ChatGPT searches the web, OpenAI’s help page on ChatGPT search says it rewrites your prompt into one or more targeted queries, sends them to third-party search providers, and may run follow-up searches. Its Enterprise and Edu help page names Bing as one of those providers. ChatGPT then writes an answer and links the sources it used.
So a recommendation is not a paid slot or a fixed ranking. It is a summary of what the web says about firms like yours for that exact question. That leads to three practical points:
- You need to be findable by OpenAI’s crawler and by the search index behind it.
- Other sites matter as much as yours. If ChatGPT cites a “top agencies” list or a directory, being on that page is what gets you named.
- Answers vary. OpenAI notes citations can be incomplete or incorrect, and results change with wording and location. Track trends, not one screenshot.

Step 1: Test the prompts your buyers actually use
Before changing anything, find out where you stand. Write down 10–20 prompts a real buyer would type, run each in ChatGPT with search on, and log the result in a sheet.
| Prompt type | Example for a B2B service firm | What to log |
|---|---|---|
| Category + location | Best software development company in Jaipur | Is your firm named? Which firms are? |
| Need + budget | Who can build a Flutter app for a startup under $20k? | Which sources are cited for price advice? |
| Comparison | Agency vs freelancer for a WordPress rebuild | Is your own blog or service page cited? |
| Brand check | What does [your company] do? Is it reliable? | Are your services, location and reviews described correctly? |
The “sources” column is the most useful. In our own keyword research on 22 Oct 2026, Google results for “software development company in Jaipur” were led by directories such as Clutch, GoodFirms and DesignRush. If ChatGPT cites the same kinds of pages for your prompts, a complete, reviewed profile there is your fastest win.
Step 2: Let OAI-SearchBot (and Bing) crawl your site
OpenAI runs separate crawlers, and each one has its own robots.txt setting. Its crawler documentation lists them:
| User agent | What it does | Recommended setting for a service firm |
|---|---|---|
| OAI-SearchBot | Finds and surfaces sites in ChatGPT search answers | Allow. Blocking it keeps you out of search answers (you may still appear as a navigational link). |
| GPTBot | Collects content that may be used to train OpenAI models | Your choice. It is independent of OAI-SearchBot. |
| ChatGPT-User | Visits pages when a user asks ChatGPT to | Not used for search inclusion; OpenAI says robots.txt may not apply. |
OpenAI says changes to robots.txt take about 24 hours to apply, and it publishes OAI-SearchBot IP ranges so you can allow them in a firewall or CDN. Check your CDN too: bot protection often blocks crawlers your robots.txt allows. A minimal rule looks like this:
Because ChatGPT search uses third-party providers, also verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools and submit your sitemap. On a WordPress site this is usually under an hour of work (our estimate); our WordPress team can check robots.txt, sitemaps and CDN rules for you.
Step 3: Make your business details consistent everywhere
AI answers often blend facts from many pages. If your site says one thing, your directory profile another and an old listing a third, the answer can be wrong or skip you. Fix the basics first:
- Same name, address and contact details on your site, Google Business Profile, Bing Places, LinkedIn and directory profiles.
- The same service list in plain words. If you build Flutter apps, say “Flutter app development”, not only “digital solutions”.
- An About page with checkable facts: founding year, location, leadership, client logos you have permission to show, and links to your profiles.
- Organization schema on the homepage that matches the page. Google says structured data is not required for its AI features, but it keeps your facts clean and machine-readable.

Step 4: Publish pages ChatGPT can quote
Google’s guide to optimizing for AI features says AEO and GEO are still SEO, and that original, non-commodity content matters most. It also advises ignoring shortcuts such as special AI files, artificial content chunking or fake mentions. The same approach serves ChatGPT, because it quotes pages that answer the question directly.
For a B2B service firm, these pages give AI answers the most to work with:
| Page | What makes it quotable |
|---|---|
| Service pages | One clear service per page, who it is for, process, timelines and starting prices or ranges |
| Case studies | Real client problem, what you built, stack, and results the client agreed to share |
| Cost and comparison guides | Honest ranges with dated sources, and when not to hire you |
| FAQ sections | Short, direct answers to the questions buyers ask before a call |
Then earn mentions on the sites ChatGPT already cites: ask happy clients for reviews on directories, pitch useful data or guides to industry lists, and answer real questions in communities as yourself. Never buy fake reviews or plant posts; that breaks platform rules and can backfire. Our AEO services guide explains how we run this work, and our AI Overviews guide covers the Google side.
Step 5: Measure and re-test
OpenAI’s publishers FAQ says ChatGPT adds utm_source=chatgpt.com to referral links, so you can filter that traffic in analytics. Note the gap: Search Engine Land reported that ChatGPT dropped this tag for some days in October 2026 due to a bug, with a fix rolling out from 15 October. Add an annotation for 8–15 Oct.
Bing Webmaster Tools added an AI Performance report in February 2026, showing how often your pages are cited in Copilot, Bing’s AI summaries and select partners. On 13 Oct 2026 Bing added a Topics Portfolio beta that groups grounding queries into topics and flags queries where other sites are cited and yours are not. Bing says the data is approximate and smaller sites may not see it yet.
Re-run your prompt log every month. In our experience movement is slow, often months, so judge the trend over a quarter.
FAQ
How do I get my business on ChatGPT?
Allow OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot in robots.txt and your CDN, verify your site in Bing Webmaster Tools, and keep your name, services and location consistent on your site and directory profiles. Then publish specific service pages and case studies, earn genuine reviews, and test buyer prompts monthly to see which sources ChatGPT cites.
Can I pay to rank in ChatGPT?
No. As of 23 October 2026, OpenAI’s publisher guidance says any public website can appear in ChatGPT search, and it describes no paid placement in organic answers. Be careful with anyone who guarantees a ChatGPT ranking. You can only improve the signals ChatGPT uses: crawl access, clear content and trusted mentions.
What is ChatGPT SEO?
ChatGPT SEO, also called AEO or GEO, is the work of making your business easy for ChatGPT to find, understand and cite. It builds on normal SEO: crawlable pages, consistent business details, original content and real reviews. The difference is that you also track which third-party pages AI answers cite and earn a place on them.
How long does it take for ChatGPT to recommend my business?
OpenAI says robots.txt changes take about 24 hours to apply, so access issues can be fixed quickly. Being named in answers usually takes longer, often a few months, because it depends on content, reviews and mentions on other sites. Re-test the same prompts monthly and judge the trend over a quarter.
