Ask ten agencies about the cost to build an AI agent and you will get ten different numbers. The answer depends on three things: how much work the agent does, which model runs it, and which tools it calls.

This guide splits the bill into what you pay once to build and what you pay monthly to run, using OpenAI and Anthropic API prices as of 13 October 2026.

Key takeaways

  • The build is usually the biggest cost. Running the agent can be cheap if you design for it.
  • Build cost is hours multiplied by rate. The ranges below are estimates from public rate benchmarks, not quotes.
  • As of 13 Oct 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 both list $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens. Small models cost about 20 times less.
  • Prompt caching, model routing and batch processing can cut a monthly token bill by more than half.
  • Bad data, missing evaluations and over-broad permissions inflate cost more than model choice does.

What an AI agent actually is

An AI agent is software that uses a language model to decide what to do next, then does it with tools. A chatbot answers questions; an agent can look up an order, draft a refund and ask a person to approve it. Our explainer on AI agents in 2026 covers the idea in more depth.

Most business agents have four parts: a model that plans the next step, tools that connect to your systems, memory (conversation history plus your documents), and orchestration code that runs the loop, checks permissions, logs each step and hands off to a human. Each part adds build hours, and the model and tools add a monthly bill.

The cost stack: four things you pay for

The cost to build an AI agent has four layers: two one-off, two ongoing. Budgeting only for the first two is a common reason projects stall.

LayerWhat it coversWhen you payWhat drives it

Build cost ranges (estimates)

Build cost is the number of hours multiplied by the hourly rate. For the rate, a public benchmark helps: Upwork reports typical machine learning engineer rates of $50–$80 an hour for beginners, $80–$120 for intermediate engineers and $120–$200+ for advanced engineers, based on historical contracts worldwide.

The hour ranges below are illustrative planning scopes, not survey data. Multiplied by the benchmark rates, they give these estimated ranges:

Agent typeTypical scopeEstimated hoursEstimated build cost
Single-workflow agentOne job, such as support answers plus order lookup, 1–2 integrations, human hand-off200–400$10,000–$48,000 (at $50–$120/hr)
Multi-tool operations agent3–6 integrations, approval steps, admin dashboard, evaluation set500–900$25,000–$108,000 (at $50–$120/hr)
Complex agentSeveral cooperating agents, sensitive actions, audit logs, SSO, compliance review, ongoing evaluations1,000–2,000$80,000–$400,000 (at $80–$200/hr)

These are estimates based on public rate benchmarks multiplied by typical scope, not quotes and not Eoxys rates. Your real number depends on your systems, your data and where your team is based.

The AI agent cost stack: discovery and build are one-off costs; LLM tokens, tools and operations are monthly.

Fixed-cost, dedicated-team and hourly contracts share this risk differently. Our guide to hiring AI developers in India compares them. For a number based on your actual workflow, ask Eoxys for an estimate.

LLM and tool run costs as of 13 Oct 2026

Model prices are listed per million tokens. These are standard short-context API prices from the OpenAI pricing page and Anthropic pricing page, checked on 13 October 2026.

Model (as of 13 Oct 2026)Input / 1MCached input / 1MOutput / 1M
OpenAI GPT-6.1 Sol$2.00$0.10$10.00
OpenAI GPT-6 Luna$0.10$0.01$0.50
OpenAI GPT-5.4 mini$0.75$0.075$4.50
Claude Opus 5.5$4.00$0.20$20.00
Claude Sonnet 5.5$2.00$0.10$10.00
Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens)$0.10$0.01$0.50

Tools are billed on top. Both vendors charge $10 per 1,000 web searches plus result tokens. OpenAI’s file search costs $0.10 per GB per day after 1 GB free, plus $2.50 per 1,000 calls. Anthropic’s Claude Managed Agents adds $0.08 per session-hour of running time.

Worked example: a customer support agent

Illustrative assumptions: 10,000 conversations a month, six model calls per conversation, 4,000 input tokens per call (3,000 of them a cached system prompt and tool list) and 300 output tokens per call.

  • 60,000 calls a month: 60 million fresh input tokens, 180 million cached input tokens and 18 million output tokens.
  • On GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5: (60 × $2) + (180 × $0.10) + (18 × $10) = about $318 a month.
  • The same traffic without caching: (240 × $2) + (18 × $10) = about $660 a month.
  • On GPT-6 Luna or Claude Haiku 5.5: (60 × $0.10) + (180 × $0.01) + (18 × $0.50) = about $17 a month.
  • Routing 80% of calls to a small model and 20% to a flagship: about $77 a month.

The math leaves out cache-write charges and taxes. Equal prices also do not mean equal bills: Anthropic says Claude 4.7 and later models use a tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text. Our GPT-6.1 Sol vs Claude Sonnet 5.5 comparison covers quality differences.

How to keep the bill down

  • Route by difficulty. Send simple classification and replies to a small model and hard reasoning to a flagship. In the example above, this cut the bill by about three quarters.
  • Cache the stable part of the prompt. Put the system prompt, tool definitions and policy text first so they are reused. On Sonnet 5.5, a cache hit costs 5% of the normal input price.
  • Batch what can wait. Anthropic gives 50% off for batch jobs, and OpenAI lists batch and flex prices at half the standard rate for most models. Use them for reports and back-office work.
  • Evaluate before you scale. Track accuracy and cost per task on a test set of real requests. Fixing a prompt with 200 test cases is cheaper than fixing it with 20,000 customers.

Risks that inflate cost

  • Bad or scattered data. If answers live in old PDFs and scattered spreadsheets, cleaning them can take longer than building the agent.
  • No evaluations. Without a test set, every model or prompt change needs manual checking.
  • Over-permission. Agents that can refund, delete or email need more guardrails. Scope each tool tightly and map defences to the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications.
  • Privacy and data location. Personal data in prompts brings legal duties, such as India’s DPDP Act. Data-residency options also cost more: both vendors list a 10% uplift for regional or US-only processing on recent models.
  • Runaway loops. Set step limits and spend alerts.

FAQ

How much does it cost to build an AI agent in 2026?

Using public rate benchmarks multiplied by typical scope, a single-workflow agent is an estimated $10,000–$48,000 to build, a multi-tool operations agent $25,000–$108,000, and a complex multi-agent system $80,000 or more. These are estimates, not quotes. Monthly model and hosting costs come on top.

How much does an AI agent cost to run each month?

It depends on volume, prompt size and model. In our illustrative example of 10,000 support conversations a month, tokens cost about $318 on GPT-6.1 Sol or Claude Sonnet 5.5 with caching, and about $17 on a small model. Add hosting, monitoring and any paid tools such as web search.

Which is cheaper for agents, OpenAI or Anthropic?

On list prices as of 13 October 2026, GPT-6.1 Sol and Claude Sonnet 5.5 match at $2 input and $10 output per million tokens. Your real bill also depends on tokenizer differences, caching, output length and how many steps each model needs, so test both on your own tasks.

How long does it take to build an AI agent?

A focused single-workflow agent often takes several weeks, from discovery to a monitored launch. Agents that connect to many systems, take sensitive actions or need compliance review take a few months. The fastest route is to launch one workflow, measure it, then add tools in later phases.

Is it cheaper to use an off-the-shelf agent tool?

Often yes, for a standard job your existing software already supports. A custom agent makes sense when the workflow is specific to your business, touches your own systems, or needs control over data and cost. Many companies start with a tool, then build custom where it falls short.

What hidden costs should I budget for?

Budget for data clean-up, evaluation sets, monitoring, prompt and model updates when vendors release new versions, security review, and staff time to handle escalations. Data-residency processing can add about 10% to token prices. Leave room for a second phase after you see real usage.
