An AI agent is software that uses a language model to decide what to do next: look something up, call an API, update a record, or hand off to a person. Building one that works reliably in a real business is a different job from building a chatbot demo. If you plan to hire an AI agent developer, it helps to know what the role really covers, which skills to test, and what the main hiring options cost.
This is the first post in our “2027 AI careers” series, written for founders, CTOs and operations heads who need to decide whether to hire, contract or outsource. Cost figures come from public sources checked on 29 October 2026; anything else is labelled as our working view.
Key takeaways
- An AI agent developer combines backend engineering with LLM skills: tool calling, retrieval, evaluation, guardrails and monitoring.
- Hire one when an agent must act inside your systems (CRM, ERP, ticketing, payments), not just answer questions.
- Public benchmarks: Upwork lists $30 to $150 an hour for AI agent developers; the US BLS median for software developers was $135,980 a year in May 2025.
- Test candidates on a small paid task with your own data, and ask how they measure accuracy and block unsafe actions.

What an AI agent developer does
A typical week for an AI agent developer covers five kinds of work:
- Design the agent’s job: which tasks it handles, which it must never do, and when it hands over to a human.
- Connect tools: write the functions and API integrations the agent can call, with clear inputs, outputs and permissions.
- Ground it in your data: retrieval over documents, product data or tickets, so answers come from your sources, not guesses.
- Test and evaluate: build test sets of real requests and measure how often the agent gets them right.
- Run it in production: logging, tracing, cost control and alerts. Our AI agent observability guide covers this part.
Choosing the right structure matters before any code. A single prompt, an agent loop and a graph-based workflow suit different problems, as we explain in Prompt, Loop or Graph?.
Skills and tools to look for

| Skill area | What good looks like | Tools you may see on a CV |
|---|---|---|
| Backend engineering | Clean APIs, queues, retries, auth, databases | Python or TypeScript, REST, Postgres, cloud functions |
| LLM and agent frameworks | Tool calling, structured outputs, multi-step workflows | OpenAI Agents SDK, LangGraph, provider SDKs |
| Integrations | Safe connections to CRMs, helpdesks, ERPs and internal tools | Model Context Protocol (MCP) servers, webhooks, vendor APIs |
| Retrieval and data | Chunking, embeddings, search, access control on documents | Vector databases, hybrid search, document pipelines |
| Evaluation | Test sets, pass rates, regression checks before each release | Eval scripts, tracing tools, human review queues |
| Security and safety | Least-privilege tools, prompt-injection defences, approval steps | Knows the OWASP Top 10 for LLM applications |
The OWASP list is a useful filter. It names risks such as prompt injection and “excessive agency”, where an agent has more permissions or autonomy than it needs. A strong developer will talk about both without being asked.
When a business needs one
You probably need an AI agent developer, rather than a no-code tool or a chatbot builder, when:
- The agent must take actions in your systems: create orders, update tickets, book slots, issue refunds within limits.
- It must work with private or regulated data and respect user permissions.
- You need measurable accuracy and an audit trail, for example in finance, healthcare or customer support.
- Off-the-shelf agents from your CRM or helpdesk vendor cannot reach the systems you need.
If a packaged tool already covers the job, use it. Our guide on custom AI agents vs off-the-shelf tools helps you decide.

In-house vs freelance vs agency
| Option | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| In-house hire | A long-term agent roadmap and core product work | Hiring time, a single point of failure, needs senior review |
| Freelancer | A small, well-defined agent or a prototype | Availability, handover quality, security of your data |
| Agency or dedicated team | A production agent with integrations, QA and support | Vendor lock-in; ask for code ownership and documentation |
| Hybrid | An agency builds; your engineer learns and takes over | Plan the handover from day one |

Cost factors and benchmarks
There is no official salary series for “AI agent developer” yet, so use nearby benchmarks and label them clearly:
| Benchmark | Figure | Source and date |
|---|---|---|
| US median pay, software developers | $135,980 a year (May 2025) | US Bureau of Labor Statistics, Occupational Outlook Handbook |
| Freelance AI agent developers on Upwork | $30 to $150 an hour, depending on scope and experience | Upwork hiring guide |
| Upwork project ranges: workflow automation agent | $2,000 to $5,000 a project | Upwork hiring guide |
| Upwork project ranges: custom LLM-powered agent | $5,000 to $15,000 a project | Upwork hiring guide |
| Upwork project ranges: multi-agent system | $10,000 to $30,000 a project | Upwork hiring guide |
What moves the price most, in our experience: the number of systems the agent must connect to, how strict the accuracy target is, data clean-up, security reviews, and who supports it after launch. Model and hosting costs are separate and ongoing. Our guide on the cost to build an AI agent breaks down build and run costs.
How to test a candidate
- Give a short paid task: one tool call to a sandbox API, plus five test cases. Look at how they handle failures.
- Ask how they would stop the agent from doing something harmful, such as refunding the wrong order.
- Ask how they measure accuracy and what pass rate they would accept before launch.
- Ask about cost control: caching, model choice and limits on loops.
- Check they write documentation another engineer can follow.
FAQ
What does an AI agent developer do?
They design, build and run software agents that use a language model to plan steps and call tools, such as APIs, databases or business apps. The job covers integrations, retrieval over your data, testing, guardrails and monitoring in production, plus clear documentation so your team can maintain the agent later.
How much does it cost to hire an AI agent developer?
It depends on the model. Upwork’s hiring guide lists $30 to $150 an hour for freelance AI agent developers. For a full-time hire, the US BLS median for software developers was $135,980 a year in May 2025. Agencies usually quote per project after scoping.
Should I hire in-house or outsource AI agent development?
Outsource if you need one agent built well and quickly, or lack senior engineers to review the work. Hire in-house if agents are core to your product and you have a long roadmap. Many teams start with an agency pilot and hire later.
Can Eoxys build an AI agent for my business?
Yes. We scope the use case, connect your systems, build tests and guardrails, and support the agent after launch. You can work with us on a fixed-cost project, a dedicated team or hourly. Get a real project estimate within 24 hours, with an NDA on request.
